Of course, action films like these - where more thought apparently goes into writing the various rap songs on the soundtrack - have never been known for their Oscar-caliber scripts.

Beyond the bad and stilted dialogue, the recycled plot, and the third act development that's inane and ludicrous, it's the revelatory elements written by screenwriters John O'Brien (making his debut) and Channing Gibson ('Lethal Weapon 4') that blew me away.ДЄt various points in the film, characters suddenly announce that they've figured out an important point about someone or something. Nor is it that I'm jealous of the quality of what's written. It's not that others have succeeded or beat me to the punch with story ideas. materials.Д¬OMMENTS: After years of reviewing movies, I've come to the realization that I wasted a great deal of time in the past while writing screenplays.

Beyond the various rap songs and score (that arrive in full dynamic range and with a decent mix of front and rear speaker usage), the audio track is very active and quite loud. Sporting a rich appearance, the picture is uniformly sharp and features solid black and vibrant colors.

Surprisingly, amidst the raft of big names, DMX affiliate Drag-On steals one of the best tracks, 'Fireman,' an offkilter track that blows through a pair of contrasting percussion lines, borrowing from 'Papa Was a Rolling Stone' and 'Pusherman,' but sounds completely original nevertheless.AUDIO/VIDEO ELEMENTS: Other than a few washed out whites, the widescreen image here looks quite good. Eminem's self-produced 'Go to Sleep' is an extremist (even for him) murder fantasy that goes down in a hail of screams and bullets, while 'My Life (Cradle 2 the Grave)' finds Foxy Brown turning curiously reflective (and more than just a bit poignant). The lead-off track is DMX's own 'X Gon' Give It to Ya,' a typically grandiose contribution that compares pretty well to the rest of his work but doesn't sound too special.

Taking up the slack, fortunately, are some of the hottest rappers circa 2003: Eminem, with a track featuring DMX as well, plus 50 Cent, Foxy Brown, Clipse, and Drag-On. He must have been especially busy filming, since the soundtrack for Cradle 2 the Grave, his first starring turn (with Jet Li), has only three features for DMX himself. Ever since his album debut, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, the former Earl Simmons has flaunted a flare for the dramatic, and his work ethic is one of the toughest in hip-hop.
